Sunshine’s (sort of secret) Mini Bonsai Tree Shop

Plants are important to have in the home. They can help purify the air, alleviate stress and improve overall well-being.  Bonsai trees are something beyond. They are magical. Like an old companion, I feel like that if you have a Bonsai tree in your home, you will never be alone. Have you ever been to “Sunshine Miniature (Bonsai) Trees" shop? Located on Greenville Ave, in a very yellow, "out of place," house, you will instantly be transformed to a magical place like no other "tree shop" you’ve probably encountered. You don't have to know what you are looking for in a tree. Just go in and let the trees... speak to you. 😉

Plants are important to have in the home. They can help purify the air, alleviate stress and improve overall well-being.

Bonsai Trees are something sort of “extra.”

They are magical.

I feel like if you have a Bonsai tree in your home, you will never be alone.

They are like an old companion. Humanlike, if you will, in the way that they seem to want to tell you a story, or listen to yours.

Spiritually, it is thought that Bonsai trees cultivate patience and spark creativity.

I read somewhere that in Japanese culture, the Bonsai represents a way of being, thinking and feeling.

A way of practicing sympathy

Every thing in Nature is unique, but there is something captivating about a Bonsai. Each tree wears its individuality like a beautiful statement.

They make the perfect gift too. A gentle reminder to stay present and connected.

Anytime we need a Bonsai, we head to the most special, almost hidden, “Sunshine’s Miniature (Bonsai) Trees” shop– an establishment that’s been around since 1969.

Sandwiched between a Taco Bell, a run down fence and a liquor store, if you have not been to “Sunshine’s” you are missing out.

This little Dallas legacy business is a “living breathing” representation of the man who opened it, his son, David Sunshine says.

I’d call it “an experience”.

Located on Greenville Ave, in a very yellow, “out of place,” house, you will instantly be transformed to a magical place like no other “tree shop” you’ve probably encountered. Inside the uneven floors and ancient walls, you’ll find a sea of rooms and little trees. There’s absolutely nothing chic about it, which makes us love it even more.

The little shop opened over 50 years ago, before Greenville had Taco Bells. David Sunshine called the space “Wabi Sabi” — meaning “life with decay” something his father found beautiful about life.

It an absolute gem of a space to find a beautiful and mystical plant, as well as a great escape from the superficial world, that is Dallas.

Bonsai trees are something to treasure. Despite their small build, miniature Bonsai trees can outlive their owners, being passed down from generation to generation, for hundreds of years.

It’s okay if you don’t know what you are looking for.

Let the trees speak for themselves and trust you will be guided to the perfect fit.

Need guidance? There are plenty of cool folks in there that are knowledgeable and willing to help you find the perfect gift, or addition to your plant family.

We recently went in to find a Bonsai, but almost immediately spotted a little Brazilian Rain Tree. It now sits proudly in our kitchen next to a photo of my husband’s late father.

It spoke to us. 😉

Sunshine’s is open 7 days a week from 9-6pm.
